All about Serotonin 😇

Hello everyone ! Have a wonderful and safe day 🙋🏻

Seratonin is a neurotransmitter, secreted in the gut and the brain. It plays a massive role in our state of wellbeing. It is responsible for giving us a feeling of a happy state of mind, a sense of satisfaction, relief from pain and control our impulses. It helps to co-ordinate the autonomic, motor, cognitive functions, appetite, emotions and feelings. It also controls our circadian rythm, which is the awake sleep cycle as a precursor of melatonin.

Seratonin cycle:
Tryptophan — 5 Hydroxytryphtophan —-Serotonin—- N -Acetylserotonin—Melatonin

When serotonin is low, it may give rise to several problems in our overall wellbeing. Before diving into the symptoms, it is essential to know what causes to reduce the level of serotonin in the body:

Causes of Low Serotonin :
1.Sedentary Lifestyle
2.Inadequate sleep.
3.Chronic Brain inflammation
4.Leaky gut syndrome
5.Poor blood sugar control
6.Magnesium deficiency
7.Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency.
8.Vitamin deficiency, namely Vitamin D, B1, B2, B6 and folate.

The different symptoms when the serotonin level is low:
1.Anxiety and Panic attacks
2.Social phobia
3.Mood swings
4.Depression
5.Low self-esteem
6.Overtly sensitive, having a sense of guilt, regrets
7.Trouble sleeping
8.Obsessive behaviour like controlling, impulsive, neat freak.

The serotonin level can be measured by Urine biomarker test (Organic Acid test).

The natural ways to improve the level of serotonin are:

1. Reducing the intake of carbohydrate, especially with a high glycaemic index like sugar, processed food. Also, switching the diet to a moderate amount of carbohydrate with a low glycaemic index like brown rice, whole grains.
2.Exercise increases the tryptophan level and balances the serotonin and dopamine balance.
3. Get better quality of sleep every day by following a routine. Make sure to get up and sleep at the same time daily to keep the awake sleep cycle intact.

4.Exposure to sunlight so the UV light absorbed in the skin can simulate Vitamin D production, which in turn stimulates serotonin production. That is why, in winters, many people suffer from depression and mood swings due to lack of exposure to sunlight.
5.Meditation helps to maintain the serotonin dopamine balance and the calmness of mind.
6.Getting a cold shower of 2-3 minutes will also stimulate the serotonin receptors. So, after a cold shower, people tend to feel relaxed.
7.Getting a body massage also helps to stimulate serotonin receptors.

8. Seratonin boosting foods: Wild-caught fatty fishes, green tea, turmeric, fermented foods, nuts, seeds, low glycaemic fruits and veggies, dark chocolate.

Dopamine release 😇

Hello everyone ! Have a wonderful and safe day 🙋🏻

img_1381

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released between neurons in the brain. There is a brain reward pathway known as the mesolimbic dopamine system which gets triggered and releases dopamine when an unexpected reward is anticipated. Once the award or the outcome is achieved, the dopamine eases and comes back to its average level. So, dopamine is a chemical of motivation and desire, which is released in the brain whenever there is the anticipation of reward and pleasure.

img_1380

Psychologically, our brain is devised as a survival mechanism, since evolution. When we interact with resources we have, we conduct consummatory behaviour of pure feeling of satisfaction like while eating or drinking. When we interact with resources which we do not have but desire to have, we hold appetitive behaviour which are like motivation, drive, passion, hard work. The dopamine chemical is released and peaked when a reward or outcome is expected. Its primary purpose is to maximize future resources.
The rest of the time, the brain is more engaged with other chemicals like serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin, which gives the sense of satisfaction of the present moment of here and now. So, like all chemicals in the body, in the brain, too there is a need for chemical homeostasis. As long as the homeostasis is there, things are in harmony.

img_1379

But in today’s time, our life is filled with lots of things and means which greatly overstimulate this reward pathway. These stimulants greatly multiply the dopaminergic drive, and the tolerance level develops faster and easier. People chase for money, success, technology gadgets, cars, fame, drugs, sex, alcohol and a lot more. Our society is filled with compelling things all around. We look around for something that would give us dopamine hits in terms of pleasure and reward like chasing for a sugar rush, binging junk food, shopping, smartphones, video gaming, drinking alcohol or doing drugs.

img_1385

Developing addiction for TV shows, Netflix, video games, social media like facebook, Instagram, WhatsUp, internet surfing and the list goes on and on. Many of us are not even aware of the fact that it’s this dopamine drive of pleasure and reward that keep us chasing for these stimulants.

img_1377

As a result of this over-exhaustion of dopamine release, we fail to live life in the present moments; we fail to make one to one connections, spend time with family and loved ones and doing meditation, yoga or practising mindfulness. All these steps give us clarity of mind and also satisfaction and contentment. Psychologically, developing social connections, compassions, mindfulness helps the release of chemicals like serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, which causes to restore the chemical haemostasis in the brain.

img_1383

Dopamine Detox or Dopamine Fasting has been doing so much around as a strategy to antidote this dopamine overexhaustion. It’s a strategy of completely withdrawing from all the pleasurable activities for a specific period, say a day in the week to reset the brain from this imbalance. But, scientific studies show that it is not possible to reset this dopaminergic pathway completely. There is no total solution in dopamine fasting.

img_1382

But yes, withdrawing for a while, or controlling and reducing the stimulants routinely can help our brain to balance and restore the chemical haemostasis. The critical solution is maintaining a balance in life.

img_1384

It’s essential to get motivated and thrive for success, money, fame, pleasure. Still, at the same time, it’s also crucial sometimes to slow down a while, relax, spend time with loved ones, meditate and be mindful to remain contentment.

Post : Let’s be happy today 😃! 4 ways to elevate your happy hormones.

Hello everyone ! Happy weekend 😃🤗

I think God has given us the most efficient machine, our body, within which lies the solutions of every stress and issues. so, it is entirely up to us whether we run this machine efficiently and enjoy its benefits or be gloomy under stress and end up in a diseased state.

The happy hormones include Dopamine, Seratonin, Endorphins and Oxytocin run within the bloodstreams produced from various glands, acting as pleasure and happiness messengers which lifts our mood. They are neurotransmitters produced by the central nervous system which regulates our mood, sleep, memory, motor movements, digestion, appetite and learning ability.

Each of them have its own relevance within our body’s mechanism.

Dopamine or reward hormone: It is linked to the brain’s reward system. Whenever we complete a task or a goal, we feel accomplished, rewarded, pleasure, all because of this hormone. This hormone mainly releases during mind activity like meditation, playing an instrument, performing a task, exercise or doing something creative.

Serotonin: This hormone is derived from amino acid tryptophan which regulates the mood and emotions. Whenever we help others or share with others, we get a feeling of contentment and pleasure, it is due to this hormone.

Endorphins or Natural painkiller: It is produced in response to pain or discomfort/ stress to ease the situation. It is produced after heavy workouts, eating spicy food, having sex or laughing.

Oxytocin or love hormone: It produces the calming effect and is released during social bonding. It is linked to reproduction. Hugging, cuddling, kissing between parents and newborn, partner, family members, friends, pets are all due to this hormone.

4 simple ways to elevate your happy hormones every day:

1.Plan the day: Always get up from the bed with a sense of gratitude and a positive note for being around with your loved ones. Plan your day with short term practical goals and task to proceed through the day. So, that when you complete each of the tasks, you pat yourself, feel rewarded and contented. Do take out time to laugh out with your partner or a friend.

2.Mind activity: Certain activities stimulate the mind like meditating, listening to the music of your choice, cooking a meal, playing an instrument, exercising, going for outdoor activities and being creative with a hobby. So, never forget to devote some time to yourself in spite of the daily grind to get your daily dose of happy hormones release.

3.Eating: Certain food directly stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin. Like dopamine is made from tyrosine which is present in bananas, avocados, apples, oats, beans and leafy vegetables. Similarly, serotonin is released while eating bananas, walnuts, dairy products and also carbohydrate. Exposure to sunlight also helps in releasing serotonin.

4.Social Bonding: Bondings with loved ones, spending time with friends, relatives also releases these hormones. Helping and sharing with others gives the much-needed boost to happy hormones. Do enjoy hugging your partner, loved ones, friends, cuddling a child.
In the case of children too, as parents, always let them share and help their siblings, friends very often, Make them play with their friends outside so that they get to learn social bonding.

All these small steps during the day and every day would ensure the release of the steady flow of happy hormones in the body. So, whether there are stress, problems or trouble in our daily life, we can overcome them with ease.

Post: 4 interesting facts about gut feeling. Is it same as intuition? 💁🏻

Why is the term ” gut “ attached to the word ” feeling”? Off course, there has to be a reason. More preferably, a scientifically researched fact.

1.Your gut is lined by a network of neurons. It is found that about 100 million neurons are lined across the gut ( alimentary canal ) which are even more than in the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system but is less than the brain. This is called the enteric nervous system. So, gut feeling is also referred to as the ” second brain”. The brain and gut are connected through this network of neurons which is the gut-brain axis. Your gut, the enteric nervous system can act independently from the brain, the central nervous system. But, most of the time, it is overridden by the brain. That is the reason, most of the time, we ignore or consciously don’t acknowledge our gut feeling.

2.The most important aspect of gut feeling is quick and automatic, appear even before the brain starts thinking logically. The gut makes similar chemicals as the brain do while thinking. It makes a quick evaluation of the situation at hand and gives feedback. It cannot analyse and do logical thinking as the brain.

3.The huge microbiome flora in the gut not only influences the gut alone with what diet you eat but also has the perception of this world and can influence the mind and behaviour. They influence the body’s level of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that regulates the feelings of happiness. That is the reason a healthy diet, good sleep, good exercise can influence your mood and behaviour.

4.Your gut feeling is not intuition. Intuition is something to do with your highest level of consciousness, it is said to be the voice of the soul.
Whereas gut feeling is your very human instinct. This feeling comes collectively from the neuronal network in your gut which gives you feedback based on your past experiences with the intent to keep your body safe and protected. It concerns your fear and struggles for survival.

You don’t feel right when a particular person is around you, or you feel uncomfortable in a particular situation or when you feel something is not right for you to eat, are all your gut feelings. It centres around your struggle and fear-based on your past.

Intuition is your inner voice, which may tell you choose a particular career path, or follow a certain dream or choose to be with someone.

You can rely on your gut, and choose to remain safe and not take any risk. In most instances, you use your logical brain to choose depending on your past experiences what works for you safe and better.
Or you can hear your intuition and work beyond your reaches to something unknown in the past in your life experiences, or the ones which appear in your dreams.

So, you have a choice to make at every moment throughout your life.

Take care. Much love to all 💐
